Cupcake Caught My Eye

Cupcake Caught My Eye

After getting my fill of Mediterranean food for lunch on Saturday, I couldn’t help but make a pit stop…for cupcakes!

Big Man Bakes

Big Man Bakes is a cupcake store I used to pass on some Sunday long runs when I lived near DTLA. I would sometimes run past it before turning right, back to Figueroa. This time however, I was walking straight towards it.

Just FYI…

Once I got to the small storefront, I gazed into the display case of perfectly frosted cupcakes, and didn’t even know what to pay attention to first.

The young lady behind the counter was eager to share a bit about Big Man Bakes, and some of their classic and seasonal flavors that were currently available. I was thinking I’d go for the Red Velvet or Oreo…

…but in the end, I went with a seasonal flavor—strawberry!

It was called an “XL” cupcake, but it really wasn’t that big. To me, it seemed like a standard-sized cupcake.

The cake itself was moist, but it didn’t stand out in regards to flavor. I was also hoping for a generous serving of cream filling on the inside, but sadly, that wasn’t the case.

At least it was pretty photogenic:

Milk in Cookies

Milk in Cookies

We had our fill on Thanksgiving and Black Friday no doubt, but my sister had her heart set on venturing out to the one and only Dirty Cookie in Tustin for their trademark cookie shots.

 Ahh so many cookie shots!
Ahh so many cookie shots!

I hadn’t realized it before, but they happened to be in the same Tustin Ranch area as the Native Foods I visited over the summer. Unfortunately, the Native Foods closed, but I did not venture into the Union Market last time…

Little did I know I was missing out on A LOT. Dirty Cookie was one of them. Thanks to my sis, I know I’ll have to be back so I can check out the other foodie stalls inside—everything from customizable s’mores to ice cream crepes!

There was one employee working at the time we visited, and she gleefully filled us in on the concept. We got to choose our flavor shot glass-shaped cookie, and pick chocolate milk, regular milk, or vanilla cream as our milk to go inside the cookie shot. Each cookie was also coated with belgian chocolate :9 !!

I chose the pumpkin spice cookie, which was coated in white chocolate and topped with cinnamon spice. I had the vanilla cream as my milk.

My sis got the chocolate (of course) cookie, and filled it to the brim with regular ol’ milk (which surprised me—I thought she would choose the chocolate milk without fail 😛 ).

We also got a chocomint cookiewich to share, which tasted like a soft peppermint whoopie pie. It actually ended up being my favorite, since I found the cookie shot too sweet. Even the vanilla cream tasted more like regular milk…I was expecting it to be thicker and well, creamier.

My sis absolutely adored her chocolate cookie shot, and her sweetness quota was maxed out for the day. I’m glad that it at least met her expectations 😉

Banana Cream and Chunky Chocolate PB Cookies

Banana Cream and Chunky Chocolate PB Cookies

I was in the mood to use my dehydrator again this past week because of our abundance of strawberries. I was able to finely cut a bowl of them into slices, toss ‘em on a tray with an extra banana cut up into slices as well, and I ended up with some crispy, intensely sweet fruit chips that were a much better alternative to the $3 mini-serving-size bags of freeze-dried strawberries found in the grocery store.

But I also had some other ingredients on hand, and wanted test out a cookie recipe. The result was this:

Ingredients
  1. - 1 cup of oats (80 grams)
  2. - 1/2 cup banana-flavored ice cream (thawed or semi-thawed)
  3. - 1/3 cup of water
  4. - 2 tbsp. of dark chocolate chunky peanut butter (32 grams)
Instructions
  1. Mix oats, ice cream, and water so that a "foamy" batter forms.
  2. Soak the mixture for 2+ hours in the fridge.
  3. Scoop into mounds on a dehydrator sheet or rack (makes about seven good-size cookies).
  4. Dehydrate for 135F for 8 hours.
  5. Stop dehydrating, and (carefully) flip cookies over if still flimsy and limp.
  6. Dehydrate at same temperature for another 2.5 hours.
  7. Eat by themselves, or add more peanut butter/add to ice cream 🙂

The cookies turned out to be firmer on the outside, but still chewy towards the center after the two rounds of dehydration. The banana ice cream was a good binding agent, but the most flavor came out from the peanut butter. And even though I used a chunky dark chocolate peanut butter, I could barely detect actual peanut chunks or chocolate…it was all about the oats and scent of peanut butter.

It made for some nice breakfast bites before an 8-hour workday, and my sister helped herself to one for an after-dinner snack. Knowing that the recipe, as simple as it is, resulted in some decent-looking cookies without the use of an oven, I will be experimenting with different flavored ice creams, milks, and flours in the future 🙂 !

Super Sweet Blogging Award

Super Sweet Blogging Award

Madison nominated me for The Super Sweet Blogging Award a while back, and I was in the mood to fill it out (finally). Thanks again to the lovely Madison :)!

The rules:

  1. Give credit to the person who chose to nominate you.
  2. Answer the “Super Sweet” questions.
  3. Nominate a “Baker’s Dozen (13) blogs.

Super Sweet Questions:

1. Cookies or Cake?

I love both, but I think cake takes the cake (haha?). I will admit that I’ve always been fond of those soft sugar cookies with frosting and sprinkles on them…you know, the ones that are featured at the front of the grocery store and are often the go-to desserts for elementary classroom parties and potlucks?

(source)

Yeah, these were my excuse to party!

2. Chocolate or Vanilla? I love both, and it really depends on what is chocolate or what is vanilla. For example, I love chocolate frosting on white/yellow cakes or cookies, but I prefer vanilla meringues over chocolate. If I have to choose between chocolate or vanilla ice cream, I’m gonna go with vanilla.

3. What is your favorite sweet treat? It’s never too cold for ice cream, or even froyo. With lots of fun toppings like rainbow mochi and sprinkles!

4. When do you crave sweet things the most? It makes the most sense to crave things when you haven’t had them in a while, so I’ll usually crave sweets if I’m eating more fruits and veggies than usual. I try to treat myself to some form of sweets frequently though, so I don’t often have crazy cravings.

Remember this from Spongebob? That crazy-stalker fish who obviously was craving “CHOOOOOCOLATTTTTE”

5. If you had a sweet nickname, what would it be? Um, not sure? As long as it’s not sweetie pie, honey buns, or sugar lips, I’m good :P.

Never have actually eaten these, but they look (not) tasty.

I’m gonna skip the nominations, but feel free to answer any of the questions above! I’m off to start my super sweet weekend with a long nap…I have reached the halfway point of classes this quarter, and I am already BEAT!
