I thought today I’d post a light-hearted survey that I made up with student-related questions. I call it the…

NERDY GIRL SURVEY

Enjoy :D !

1. What is your favorite protein?

Kinesin! It is such a cute motor protein that serves as a vesicle carrier across microtubule filaments. Here’s an animation of it from Wikipedia:

Isn’t it CUTE?!

In some animations, Kinesin is depicted with “longer legs” and moving verrry slowly. Either way, I find the animations of this guy hilarious. But perhaps you were thinking I was going to give an edible protein as my answer…in that case, I’ll say seitan!

2. Pencil or pen?

I used to prefer pencil for math, and pen for notetaking/short answer exams, but now I prefer using a pen for everything (except multiple choice exams which require a Scantron).

3. Handwritten notes or laptop?

It’s easy to write down notes in class, although there is no guarantee they’ll be clean and organized. It’s also easier to make drawings and add tidbits of info in the margins—especially when the professor is lecturing quickly!

Although this stylish and small laptop would be nice...

Although this stylish and small laptop would be nice…

4. What has been your favorite class so far?

I took a class my freshman year on music of different cultures which I enjoyed. The professor had us watch movies and YouTube clips most of the time, but the small class size and information from the class made it really interesting and relatable to everyday life (I knew what a cumbia was when my Zumba instructor said we were going to dance to a new one ;) ). I also enjoyed my Anthropology class. (Funny how these classes have nothing to do with my major…)

5. If you could “re-do” any class from college, which one would you?

I guess I would re-do my first quarter of Chemistry only because I know I could have done better. Now I know how to study (properly) for college science classes and I could have used that knowledge to better prepare for the midterms and finals from that class.

6. Where is your most productive study spot?

To be honest? The dining table at my house.

It’s more like a shelf for our textbooks 363 days of the year (we clear it for Thanksgiving/Christmas dinners :P )! Despite the space alotted for my textbooks, I do have enough elbow room and it’s relatively quiet so I’m able to concentrate…most of the time ;) . (I don’t think one spot always guarantees productiveness).

7. How do you organize your day?

I use an old-school hardcover daily planner (none of that iPhone app silliness or weekly/monthly stuff), post-it notes, and paper scraps to write down things to do, pack for school, and my tentative itinerary for the day.

8. What is your least favorite class?

I do try to like all of my classes, but it can be hard and doesn’t always work out, since hard-headed professors, snotty TAs, and hard-core exams can get in the way. For me, physics was my least favorite college class. The labs I had to take were not so much fun to say the least, and honestly, I was bored no matter how hard I tried to be interested.

Physics can be cute…sometimes?

9. What is the best time to study for you?

I’m a morning person, but I like studying at night after dinner (unless I had an exhausting day, but at that point, it’s more like study or fail the quiz next morning!!).

10. Do you have a dream student gadget?

It would be cool to have a small enough camera to tape lecture/labs. Sure, I could use a phone or whatever, but I’m more interested in the discrete factor—I would rather not have people staring at me while taping a video of a lecture :P !

What’s a “nerdy” thing about you?

  1. This is such a fun survey! I like studying at the table too. I don’t know why… I just feel like it’s so much homier than other places I guess? I’m also a morning person but can’t study at all during the day. It’s like I’ve been conditioned not to. I guess in some ways I have with the education system the way it is…

    • I guess it just seems more natural to procrastinate in the day, haha. Even though teachers say to use that hour or two in between classes to study :P !

  3. Haha I loved this survey! You and I have a lot of similar study habits. In high school I used to study during the day but now I’m a night owl. I’m a nocturnal creature now ;)

PS – I actually knew for once what kinesin was! WOOHOO.

  4. This is a fun survey! :)
Studying and I have a love/ hate relationship though. I love to learn and understand new things, but often,I find the topics we discuss at school so useless I can hardly get myself to open my books.
Anyhoo,I ALWAYS take handwritten notes, too – when I type something up,I just can’t initialize it as much!

  5. Haha I love this survey!! I was all about pencils for note-taking in science classes and pens only for gen ed courses (like history). I also refused to use a computer to take notes, it felt like such a hassle! AANDD I always studied at my dining room table too…the best spot ever!

  7. This is such a fun survey! I love using pens too, especially colored ones because then I can sort my notes more easily.

I’m a “nerd” because I’m obsessed with fonts and weird weather! I could talk for hours about both of them, no shame.
